Biography

J.W. Roberti, Ph.D., FAAFM has been a clinical practitioner, researcher, author, academician, and consultant for over thirteen years. Dr. Roberti graduated with a doctorate of philosophy (Ph.D.) in Counseling Psychology from West Virginia University. He completed an extensive residence and post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Florida, Department of Clinical and Health Psychology at Shands Teaching Hospital. Dr. Roberti is board certified and a Fellow with the American Academy of Functional Medicine.
His clinical and programmatic research interests include behavioral medicine, psychoneuroimmunology, physical medicine, and epidemiology. Highly active in clinical research, Dr. Roberti has more than 50 peer reviewed professional publications. His research activities are driven by the health issues/complaints that patients present with during clinical practice. It is paramount to effectively transport significant research findings into clinical utility – in essence answering tough clinical questions with substantial research findings. In addition, to conducting programmatic research and disseminating clinical findings in peer reviewed publications, he serves as anad hoc reviewer for numerous professional journals.
As an academician, Dr. Roberti enjoys teaching and sharing his expertise with others. With previous academic appointments at West Virginia University, the University of Florida, New College of Florida, and the University of South Florida, he has taught several undergraduate and graduate courses. Currently Dr. Roberti holds an academic appointment as adjunct assistant professor at New College of Florida.
Clinical Mission Statement
During his clinical practice, Dr. Roberti has rebelled against the traditional healthcare model – where practitioners focus on treating symptoms of a disease or process. In the past decade, Dr. Roberti has witnessed our healthcare system lean towards remediation and cure more than prevention. Discouraged with the traditional medical model, Dr. Roberti asked the question how do we transform the quality of our bodies – in essences our lives – at the most basic level. His desire to treat the root causes of disease processes, resulted in his change in ideology and shift towards functional medicine.
Functional medicine is anchored by an examination of the core clinical imbalances that underlie various disease conditions. Those imbalances arise as environmental inputssuch as diet, nutrients (including air and water), exercise, and trauma are processed by one’s body, mind, and spirit through a unique set of genetic predispositions, attitudes, and beliefs. The fundamental physiological processes include communication, both outside and inside the cell; bioenergetics, or the transformation of food into energy; replication, repair, and maintenance of structural integrity, from the cellular to the whole body level; elimination of waste; protection and defense; and transport and circulation. The core clinical imbalances that arise from malfunctions within this complex system include:
- Hormonal and neurotransmitter imbalances
- Oxidation-reduction imbalances and mitochondropathy
- Detoxification and biotransformational imbalances
- Immune imbalances
- Inflammatory imbalances
- Digestive, absorptive, and microbiological imbalances
- Structural imbalances from cellular membrane function to the musculoskeletal system
Imbalances such as these are the precursors to the signs and symptoms by which we detect and label (diagnose) organ system disease. Improving balance – in the patient’s environmental inputs and in the body’s fundamental physiological processes – is the precursor to restoring health and it involves much more than treating the symptoms. Dr. Roberti is dedicated to improving the management of complex, chronic disease by intervening at multiple levels to address these core clinical imbalances and to restore each patient’s functionality and health. Dr. Roberti’s approach to assisting a patient is grounded in scientific principles and information widely available in medicine today, combining research from various disciplines into highly detailed yet clinically relevant models of disease pathogenesis and effective clinical management.
Dr. Roberti’s usage of functional medicine emphasizes a definable and teachable processof integrating multiple knowledge bases within a pragmatic matrix that focuses on functionality at many levels, rather than a single treatment for a single diagnosis. Functional medicine uses the patient’s story as a key tool for integrating diagnosis, signs and symptoms, and evidence of clinical imbalances into a comprehensive approach to improve both the patient’s environmental inputs and his or her physiological function.
Essential to Health & Wellness: Glutathione
Dr. Roberti strongly advocates the usage of glutathione (GSH), given its strong association with numerous disease processes. Glutathione (GSH) plays an important role in a multitude of cellular processes, including cell differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis, and as a result, disturbances in GSH balance are implicated in the progression of a number of human diseases, for example:
- Diseases of Aging
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Cardiovascular
- Inflammatory Diseases
- Immune Suppression
- Metabolic Dysregulation
- Neurodegenerative Diseases
- Acetaminophen Toxicity
- ALS
- Alzheimer’s
- ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder)
- Cancer
- Chronic Fatigue
- COPD
- Diabetes
- Heavy Metal Toxicity
- HIV
- Huntington’s Disease
- Lyme Disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Stroke
GSH levels, turnover rates, and/or oxidation state can be compromised by inherited or acquired defects in the enzymes, transporters, signaling molecules, or transcription factors that are involved in its homeostasis, or from exposure to reactive chemicals or metabolic intermediates. GSH deficiency, or a decrease in the GSH, manifests itself largely through an increased susceptibility to oxidative stress, and the resulting damage is thought to be involved in diseases such as cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, imbalances in GSH levels affect immune system function, and are thought to play a role in the aging process.
Just as low intracellular GSH levels decrease cellular antioxidant capacity, elevated GSH levels generally increase antioxidant capacity and resistance to oxidative stress, and this is observed in many diseases.
